In the face of threatened mass layoffs by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his appointed schools chief Forrest Claypool, teachers and their allies flooded into Chicago’s Loop financial district last night.
They were demanding a decent contract that preserves public education and working class living standards.
During evening rush hour, wave after wave of supporters shut down the Loop, including the Congress Expressway, in a massive show of support. A recent poll finds that Chicagoans give a 3 times higher approval rating to the teachers union than to Rahm.
